Proposal in Paris

It’s been over a month but it still feels like a dream. I’ve been prancing around with this ring for weeks now and I still get butterflies in my tummy whenever I look at it. Does something this beautiful really belong to me? Is it actually time for me to plan out the wedding of my dreams, something I’ve been planning since I was 13? More importantly, am I really getting married to the man who is my definition of perfection?

When it came to our relationship, he made it pretty obvious – not just to me but to the people around us as well, that he was the king when it came to treating a woman right. He was kind, respectful, gentle, loving and (as vain as this may sound) spoiled me with the best. Be it Valentine’s Day, our anniversaries, my birthdays or even Christmas and Easter, he didn’t just put thought into the gifts he gave me, but he made sure the entire experience was memorable. He’s one of those that believe handwritten letters are far more priceless than pretty Hallmark cards, and that a picnic by the beach beats a fancy dinner at a five-star hotel. He never did this to compete with anyone, or to boast about it on social media. He did it because of his sheer nature of giving. A quality that amazes me till date.

Believe it or not, Den and I went to the same school and stayed three blocks away from each other all our lives, but it was only in the beginning on 2012 (during university) when we connected and what got us closer? Food! Shocking, isn’t it? Haha!
One fine day, Den decided to take our friendship to the next level and wanted me to be his girlfriend. But Den being Den, he wanted it to be special.
Fun Fact: Apart from food, we both were (and still are) weirdly obsessed with the TV show Friends. We couldn’t sleep without watching at least one episode a day. In fact, we know the entire script, word for word, of each and every episode in that series by heart (something we’re very proud of, besides all our WhereMyFoodAt achievements). So on 25th October 2012, Den invited me to his house in the afternoon and I readily accepted. As I walk in, I see Den standing in the middle of his hall, filled with rose petals and candles and he comes up to me and asks me to be his girlfriend. For those of you who watch friends, one of my favorite scenes in that series was when Monica proposes to Chandler by lighting up her entire apartment with candles and roses, and Den decided to re-enact that entire scene. I should’ve known then, that when the time came for the big proposal, he’d pull out all the stops.

A few weeks before our trip to France, I get an email from a manager at Shangri La Paris inviting us to review their hotel whenever we’re in the city. Obviously, I get excited since it’s the perfect timing and I call Den and I share the news with him as well. I immediately reply to the email confirming that we will be in Paris on 30th August and would love to review the hotel. The manager then replies asking us to arrive an hour before dinner since she wants us to review their Rooftop Champagne Bar, to which I readily accepted. She also made it a point to mention that there’s a formal-chic dress code for the dinner, so I made sure to pack one of my prettiest dresses. When we arrived at the lobby of the Shangri La Hotel, the hotel manager approaches us and asks us if we’re Kim and Den – the Dubai bloggers, and offered to assist us to the rooftop bar. As we walked in I noticed the bar was empty, and it was just the staff waiting to greet us. We were then escorted to our table at the terrace and THE VIEW was one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever come across! As I gaze at the Eiffel Tower, I notice a photographer clicking pictures of the tower and of the Shangri La property. The photographer then approaches us, introduces himself as the hotel photographer, and asks if he could take a picture of us with the tower for the hotel’s website. He took a couple of shots of us and then excuses himself for a moment (I think he said he needed to take a call). Once he left us, we turned to the Eiffel Tower and were soaking in the moment of being in one of the most romantic cities in the world, and it was precisely at that time when Den popped the question by going down on one knee and made me the happiest girl in the entire freaking world! Thank god for waterproof mascara because I was balling like a baby.

Remember what I said about Den’s reputation for giving me the best of the best? Turns out, Den contacted the manager of Shangri La and asked her to send me an email inviting us to the hotel. This way, I would think that the entire evening has been planned by me (not Den) and I would never see the proposal coming. Also, remember the hotel photographer? Turns out he’s one of the best local proposal photographers in the city and Den contacted him weeks in advance and planned the whole thing out with him. Want to know the best part? The ‘Rooftop Champagne Bar’ is actually one of Shangri La Hotel’s most expensive rooms since it’s got the best view of the Eiffel Tower (Beyonce stayed there too!) and it get’s converted into a bar for a short period during the month of July. The bar technically wasn’t supposed to function on 30th August but the fabulous team of Shangri La made an exception and booked out the entire room/bar for us!

It’s almost 5 years now since I’ve loved this man that I’m soon going to call my husband. Not a day goes by when I’m not grateful for having him in my life. He’s taught me how to be the best version of myself, and how no matter what difficulties or challenges we might face if our love is true, there’s nothing we cant conquer.

It’s going to be an epic #WhereMyFoodAtWedding
